Plastic mesh pond erosion materials entrap many water birds a week here in Northeast Florida. Even eco-friendly neighborhoods use it to secure the edges of retention ponds. This Anhinga had so much of it twisted around his neck that it looked like a rope to a Palencia resident.
Luckily, Ark volunteer Mary Chris Foulks arrived in time with her handy entanglement kit. Whether it’s a Pelican caught by a complicated fishing lure or a diving duck trapped by fishing line or erosion control net, we do what we can. This Anhinga was uninjured and happy to be free once we removed the mesh. Please discourage the use of such plastic mesh in developments!
We are the only wildlife rehabilitation group licensed to care for wild birds in northeast Florida. Demands on our time and resources are staggering. Please help us help orphaned, injured, and ill birds by donating at www.thearkrescue.org/donate
