A beautiful great blue heron was rescued yesterday from a heartbreaking injury that was very likely the result of a car strike. Jessica and Phil had a bond with this heron, as he lived on the lake behind their home and came several times a day for a visit. Sadly, he showed up with a severe compound fracture this weekend. And that's when Phil and Jessica went to work finding him help. BEAKS Bird Sanctuary referred them to The Ark and Valerie was able to capture the still flighted bird with the net gun. This majestic heron would have succumbed to infection, starvation, or predation (he couldn't roost in the safety of a tree at night with his injured leg) had his injury not been detected. Compassionate euthanasia averted those forms of pain and suffering and freed him for his 'second flight.' Peace be the journey buddy. Peace be the Journey.
