This adorable little river otter was swept away from his family during the very heavy rains that hit the First Coast yesterday. He was discovered crying for help from inside a very deep storm drain in a community located off of Touchton Road. Both Ramanda and Tyler placed calls to FWC and FWC reached out to Valerie at The Ark for a rescue. Assisted by Ramanda and Tyler, Valerie was able to retrieve the very frightened and waterlogged baby.
This mo...rning he was taken up to the Jacksonville Zoo where the Animal Health Department team gave him a full examination to ascertain that neither aspiration nor pneumonia were issues. Additionally, a wonderful transfer facility was found where he could be cared for and integrated into an group of otters thus offering him his best chance for successfully gaining the skills and community he will need to thrive in the wild. THANK YOU SO MUCH Drs. Jafarey and Persky, Techs Sarah and Dewey, Keepers, Jessica R. and Melody and Tiffany in Admin!! Such a pleasure to meet you and to have your support!
Friday afternoon Valerie will drive the baby down to Orlando where she will put him into the talented and capable hands of Gail Straight of Wildlife, Inc. located in Bradenton Beach, FL. This is a wonderful organization with an incredible otter rehab program!
