Valerie was asked by FWC to retrieve an injured hawk from a homeless man in Jacksonville this past weekend. Turned out not to be a hawk - although the misidentification is a common mistake when it comes to the Nightjar family. In this case it was a Chuck-Wills-Widow. A FASCINATING BIRD! Nocturnal, it has huge eyes and a HUGE mouth that you would never expect when you first look at him. They fly at night scooping up insects in that cavernous mouth. His 'whiskers' help trap the insects. Valerie calls them the 'basking sharks of the sky." Their camoflage is incredible as well. You can barely see the bird in the foliage in the photo below.
