Last night the call came in from Oliver that he and his family were struggling to get five little ducklings out of a VERY DEEP storm drain out by the pond in their community. Folks ... Oliver wasn't exaggerating! We needed a ladder to get down to the water pipe and the terrified ducklings were easily 200 feet inside the pipe (it was 7pm and cold and dark). After much patience and coaxing, it became clear that the little ducklings weren't budging, so Valerie crawled through the cement drain pipe and retrieved them in her hoodie. NONE of this could have been accomplished without the help of Oliver and the rest of his family! ALL of whom were out in the cold with Valerie... Oliver steadying the ladder, Julieta holding the flashlight, Daniella with Val's phone playing the momma duck call video over and over, and Daniella and Jack for solidarity! It was 8pm when Val unzipped the hoodie and five little duckling ran to momma by the edge of the pond SUCCESS! Wonderful wonderful feeling for all involved.
Cant say enough about this family who didnt just make a phone call, but instead came together on a Monday night to save five babies. And even then they weren't finished ... as a parting gesture, they not only made a generous donation to The Ark, but they also shared dog food and bowls from their beloved Orion who had passed away recently. The Ark is honored to make good use of Orion's things.
Before Valerie left, she and Oliver and Daniella zip tied plastic mesh over the huge storm grate so that other ducklings wouldn't also suffer the same fate. <3
