LTTLE ANNIE ANHINGA IS FREE AFTER A 3 DAY RESCUE EFFORT <3 Steve and Nikki Paulk spotted 'Annie' on the pond behind their home in The Plantation in Ponte Vedra on 12/27. Her bill was bound up in cotton fabric and she could no longer eat. Valerie responded and made two trips to the pond on 12/27 and 12/28, but Annie was too wary and flighty to be netted even with the net gun. The third day was the charm as Annie retreated to the water for safety rather than the sky. But it too...k FIVE HOURS of patience and persistence for Steve, Nikki and Valerie to finally get the little anhinga. Success was achieved amidst the dark clouds and cold blowing rain last night at 6 pm. Valerie was in a kayak coralling Annie to shore, and Steve and Nikki circled the pond with nets. Annie grew tired enough to pull out of the water and Steve and Nikki managed to net her! Her bill was cleared of the entanglement and Annie was free. The flash photography below belies the fact that it was DARK when we sat in the wet grass and cut away the fabric woven into the poor little anhinga's bill. THIS RESCUE WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED WITHOUT THE ENDURING ASSISTANCE OF STEVE AND NIKKI. Their willingness to go 'all in' to save Annie's life is such a wonderful example of just how much we need to work together to assist and protect our precious local wildlife. Many thanks to Steve and Nikki for all the time you invested in this effort and for the wonderfully generous donation you made to The Ark to help us continue to be able to respond to situations like Annie's. Great job everyone!
