No Man (or Anhinga!) Left Behind

December 21, 2016

Well it has been a long journey for Valerie on her quest to capture a little anhinga in the Indian Springs Community in Jacksonville Beach. Anhingas often get into trouble by spearing trash rather than fish while hunting. The end result is a bill tied shut which precludes them from eating and puts them at risk for becoming trapped in a bush or tree as they try to scrape the entanglement off. Valerie first learned of this bird's situation on 12/11 when Sven called her seeki...ng help. Ten days later, and six trips back and forth from St. Augustine to Atlantic Blvd .... Success! Yesterday Valerie was able to capture the bird via net and kayak and cut away the baby sock that had become woven around and through his serated bill. Much Appreciation to the MANY neighbors in the Indian Springs HOA who allowed Valerie to access the neighborhood ponds via their yards. Special shout out to Nicole who often met Valerie out there and served as her 'wing man.'
